Mexico: children affected by domestic violence*

Client: Fundacíon Juconi via the Charlotte Miller Project
Overview: In Puebla, Mexico, Fundacíon Juconi cares for children and families affactde by the cycle of poverty and domestic violence. It runs a home for boys who have had to leave home to be safe, and Casa Juconi – a day centre close to the market to give families support. I speak fairly good Spanish. I planned projects before I left the UK,
Role: volunteer art workshop leader.
Additional roles: devised additional workshops, painted a mural at Casa Juconi, helped head office with graphic design.

Arts workshops: Casa Juconi*

Brief, aims and outcome: To build the self-esteem. Created self-portraits based on Julian Opie's graphic style; it strips away personal details thus emphasises inherent equality, and worth. Worked with nine residents of Casa Juconi. Paintings trasferred onto t-shirts (something practical and tangible).
